The Crime That Shook Muzaffarnagar
The gruesome incident took place on the night of May 29-30, when Saraswati returned home to convince her family to accept her relationship. Instead, she was strangled inside her home by her father, Rajveer Singh (55), and brother, Sumit Singh (24), while a third accomplice, Gurdayal Singh, held her down.
After killing her, the accused transported her body to a forest, poured petrol over it, and set it ablaze to destroy evidence. Two days later, the family filed a missing person’s report to mislead investigators.
How the Police Cracked the Case
On June 3, police discovered a half-burnt body near a canal in Muzaffarnagar. Due to the condition of the remains, identification was initially difficult. However, a silver bracelet on her wrist helped officers match her identity through social media photos.
During interrogation, Rajveer Singh confessed to the crime, admitting that he killed his daughter out of anger and disapproval of her relationship. The third accused, Gurdayal Singh, remains absconding, with police conducting raids to locate him.
The Victim’s Struggle for Independence
Saraswati’s tragic fate highlights the deep-rooted societal resistance against women’s autonomy. She had been forced into marriage in 2019, but left her husband two years later. In 2022, her family arranged another marriage, which also failed. That same year, she began living with Amit in Gurgaon, where both worked for the same company.
Despite her family’s opposition, Saraswati continued her relationship and returned home on May 10 to try one last time to gain their approval. Her final conversation with Amit on May 26 indicated that she was making her last attempt to convince her family.
