A devastating helicopter crash near Kedarnath kills seven, including a child and the pilot.
A Sacred Journey to Kedarnath Ends in Tragedy
In the early hours of June 15, 2025, a routine pilgrimage flight turned into a heartbreaking disaster as a helicopter en route from Kedarnath to Guptkashi crashed near Gaurikund in Uttarakhand. The Aryan Aviation chopper, carrying six pilgrims and a pilot, lost contact with air traffic control shortly after takeoff and was later found wrecked in a forested area. All seven individuals on board, including a 23-month-old child, perished in the crash.

The incident occurred around 5:20 AM, during a 10-minute return flight from the Kedarnath shrine. According to officials, the aircraft encountered sudden adverse weather conditions, including poor visibility and dense fog, which likely disoriented the pilot. The helicopter veered off course and crashed between Gaurikund and Sonprayag, a remote and rugged stretch of the Char Dham route. The Uttarakhand government suspends chopper services and orders a full safety review amid rising concerns over Char Dham aviation risks
This marks the fifth helicopter accident in the Char Dham region in just six weeks, raising urgent questions about the safety protocols of high-altitude aviation in Uttarakhand’s pilgrimage zones.
Victims and Aftermath: Grief, Shock, and Accountability
The victims hailed from various states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The pilot, identified as a seasoned flier with Aryan Aviation, was among the deceased. Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were dispatched immediately, but by the time they reached the crash site, all passengers had been charred beyond recognition.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and issued strict directives for a comprehensive review of helicopter operations in the state. “This is a painful moment for all of us. We must ensure that such incidents are not repeated,” he said in a statement. The Chief Secretary has been instructed to form a technical committee to draft a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for heli services, including mandatory weather checks and aircraft inspections before every flight.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also stepped in, reducing the frequency of helicopter operations to the Char Dham shrines and initiating an investigation through the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).
A Wake-Up Call for Pilgrimage Aviation
The Kedarnath helicopter crash has reignited a long-standing debate about the risks of commercial aviation in mountainous pilgrimage zones. With thousands of pilgrims opting for helicopter rides to avoid the arduous trek to Kedarnath, demand for quick aerial transport has surged. However, experts warn that rapid weather changes, high-altitude turbulence, and inadequate infrastructure make these routes inherently dangerous.
This latest crash follows a string of similar incidents, including a fatal crash in Uttarkashi last month and an emergency landing near Guptkashi just a week ago. Despite repeated warnings, aviation safety standards in the region remain under scrutiny, with calls growing louder for stricter regulation and better pilot training for high-altitude conditions.
For grieving families, the tragedy is more than a policy failure it’s a personal catastrophe. “We sent our parents on a spiritual journey. We never imagined they wouldn’t return,” said a relative of one of the victims, speaking to local media.
As the state mourns, the focus now shifts to preventing future tragedies. The government’s swift response suspending services, launching probes, and promising reforms is a step in the right direction. But for many, it comes too late.
