Monsoon Surge – The southwest monsoon, which made an early onset over Kerala on May 24, is now set to cover most parts of northwest India by June 25, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Monsoon’s Journey So Far
The monsoon arrived in Kerala earlier than expected, marking its earliest onset since 2009. Strong low-pressure systems over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal helped it advance rapidly, covering central Maharashtra, Mumbai, and the northeast by May 29. However, its progress stalled between May 28 and June 10, leading to dry conditions and soaring temperatures in northwest and central India.
IMD’s Forecast on monsoon surge: What’s Next?
According to the IMD, the monsoon is expected to cover the remaining parts of central and eastern India by June 18 before advancing into northwest India between June 19 and June 25. Delhi, which typically sees monsoon rains around June 27, is now likely to experience its first showers by June 22-23.
Impact on Agriculture & Economy
The monsoon plays a crucial role in India’s agriculture, supporting 42% of the population and contributing 18.2% to the GDP. Timely rainfall is essential for crop growth, reservoir replenishment, and power generation. The IMD has forecast above-normal rainfall for most parts of the country, except Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and some areas in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
Heatwave Relief & Changing Weather Patterns
The lack of rainfall since early June led to record-breaking temperatures, triggering severe heatwave conditions across northwest and central India. With the monsoon’s arrival, temperatures are expected to drop by 2-4°C, providing much-needed relief.
