A Proud Moment: India’s First Global Electric SUV Begins Its Journey
Modi Flags Off Suzuki e-Vitara: On August 26, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Maruti Suzuki’s first fully electric SUV, the e-Vitara, at the Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, a bold step into the EV market with innovation, sustainability, and manufacturing power. This isn’t just a car launch, it’s a major milestone for India’s electric vehicle (EV) journey. With cutting-edge features and export plans to over 100 countries including Japan and several European nations, the e-Vitara positions India as a rising force in clean mobility and advanced automotive manufacturing.
PM Modi called it a “special day” for India’s mission of self-reliance and green mobility. The launch shows how India is becoming a global hub for clean energy and advanced manufacturing. The e-Vitara was first showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo earlier this year, and now it’s ready to hit international roads.
This move positions India not just as a consumer of EVs, but as a global supplier, marking a new chapter in the country’s automotive industry.
Made in India, Powered by Innovation
The e-Vitara is more than just a stylish SUV, it’s a symbol of innovation. It comes in two battery options: 49 kWh and 61 kWh, with both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions. This gives buyers flexibility depending on their driving needs and local terrain.
Inside, the e-Vitara is packed with modern features:
- Sharp LED headlamps and daytime running lights
- 18/19-inch alloy wheels
- Fully digital instrument cluster
- Touchscreen infotainment system
- Wireless charging and JBL premium audio
- Panoramic sunroof and 360-degree camera
- Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
These features make the e-Vitara a strong competitor in the global EV market, going head-to-head with models like Hyundai’s Creta EV and Mahindra’s XEV 9.
Modi Flags Off Suzuki e-Vitara from Gujarat: India’s New EV Export Hub
The Hansalpur plant in Gujarat is now Suzuki’s global manufacturing base for electric vehicles. With an annual production capacity of 2.6 million units across four plants, Maruti Suzuki is ready to meet global demand.
To support this massive export push, the plant is connected to Mundra Port via a multimodal cargo terminal. This ensures faster and safer shipping of vehicles to international markets.
PM Modi also inaugurated the local production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant—a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki. This means over 80% of the battery value will now be made in India, reducing dependence on imports and boosting the domestic EV ecosystem.
A Green Future for India and the World
The launch of the e-Vitara is part of India’s bigger plan to become a leader in green mobility. EV sales in India are rising steadily, with electric passenger vehicles crossing 4% of total sales in May 2025. This trend is expected to grow even faster with the arrival of high-quality, made-in-India EVs like the e-Vitara.
Suzuki has also announced a ₹70,000 crore investment in India over the next few years to expand production and launch more EV models. This will create jobs, boost exports, and strengthen India’s position in the global auto market.
PM Modi’s message was clear: “Make in India, Make for the World.” The e-Vitara is not just a car, it’s a symbol of India’s rising power in clean technology and sustainable development.
