The meeting wasn’t just ceremonial, it was packed with action
A Historic Meeting to Mark 60 Years of Friendship
India and Singapore Set Bold Vision for Future – On September 4, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to New Delhi for a landmark meeting. The occasion marked 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, and both leaders used the moment to launch a bold and forward-looking roadmap for deeper cooperation.
The meeting wasn’t just ceremonial, it was packed with action. Modi and Wong signed multiple agreements and outlined a strategic plan that covers everything from trade and technology to security and sustainability. Their goal: to build a partnership that’s ready for the future and resilient in a changing world.
This was Wong’s first official visit to India as Prime Minister, and he arrived with a high-level delegation. The leaders emphasized that their partnership goes beyond politics, it’s built on trust, shared values, and a common vision for peace and prosperity.
Tech, Trade and Green Growth Take Center Stage
The new roadmap focuses on eight key areas:
- Economic cooperation
- Skills development
- Digitalisation
- Sustainability
- Connectivity
- Healthcare and medicine
- People-to-people exchanges
- Defence and security cooperation
One of the biggest highlights was the push for advanced technologies. India and Singapore will work together on artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, quantum computing, and digital asset innovation. These sectors are seen as the engines of future growth, and both countries want to lead the way.
They also agreed to develop green shipping corridors, promote urban water management, and build next-generation industrial parks. A new container terminal at Nhava Sheva port in Mumbai was virtually inaugurated during the meeting, showcasing Singapore’s investment of over $1 billion in Indian infrastructure.
The roadmap also includes cooperation in civil nuclear energy, space technology, and digital finance, with the Reserve Bank of India and the Monetary Authority of Singapore signing a pact to develop future-ready financial systems.
Security and Stability in a Turbulent World
Beyond economics and technology, the leaders addressed serious global concerns. Both Modi and Wong emphasized the need for joint action against terrorism and regional instability. They agreed that countries committed to peace must stand united against threats to humanity.
Singapore is already India’s largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI), and the two nations have strong defence ties. Now, they plan to deepen cooperation in defence technology, including unmanned vessels and cybersecurity frameworks.
The roadmap also includes plans to institutionalize the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable as the main platform to track progress and ensure that both sides stay aligned on goals and timelines.
A Partnership for the People and the Planet
Modi and Wong made it clear that this partnership isn’t just about governments, it’s about people. They pledged to boost cultural exchanges, civil service cooperation, and education partnerships. More Singapore-made satellites will be launched by India, and both countries will work together on space exploration.
The roadmap reflects a shared belief that collaboration is the key to solving global challenges. Whether it’s climate change, digital transformation, or geopolitical tensions, India and Singapore are choosing unity over isolation.
As PM Modi said, “Our cooperation will not remain confined to traditional areas. In keeping with the needs of changing times, advanced manufacturing, green shipping, skilling, and urban water management will also emerge as focus points of our collaboration”.
PM Wong echoed the sentiment: “In a world marked by great uncertainty and turbulence, the partnership between India and Singapore becomes even more important because this is a partnership rooted in shared values, mutual respect, and a deep reservoir of trust”.
