Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Strong Rebuttal
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, demanding concrete proof for his allegations that Hindus were involved in the Dhubri beef case. Sarma, speaking to reporters in North Lakhimpur, dismissed Gogoi’s claims as baseless and politically motivated, accusing the Congress of indulging in appeasement politics ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

The controversy erupted after pieces of beef were allegedly thrown at two temples in Dhubri and Goalpara districts, sparking communal tensions. Gogoi had suggested that Hindu groups, particularly those affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), were responsible for the act. However, Sarma categorically denied any Hindu involvement, stating that all arrested individuals belonged to the minority community.
“For someone to imagine and claim that a Hindu person can place a cow head in a temple, his entire thinking must be so narrow-minded and blackened,” Sarma said, as reported by PTI.
He further challenged Gogoi to submit proof before making such insulting accusations against Hindu society.
“If he (Gogoi) has any proof, I appeal to him to submit it to the government before insulting the Hindu society,” Sarma added.
Communal Tensions and Arrests in Dhubri
The Dhubri beef case has triggered widespread outrage, leading to multiple arrests and heightened security measures. According to police reports, 50 people have been arrested in Dhubri and five in Goalpara in connection with the incident.
Sarma emphasized that the majority of the minority community has denounced the act, stating that such actions do not represent their beliefs.
“They do not support such actions and have strongly criticized them,” Sarma said.
The Assam CM also pointed out that illegal cattle slaughter had taken place at several locations during Eid on June 8, and parts of the meat were allegedly thrown at places of worship.
In response to the rising tensions, Sarma has ordered stern action against those attempting to disrupt communal harmony. He has also accused a Bangladesh-backed organization of stoking unrest in Dhubri, further complicating the situation.
Political Fallout and Congress’s Response
The political battle over the Dhubri beef case has intensified, with Congress leaders criticizing Sarma’s handling of the situation. Gogoi has accused the BJP-led government of failing to protect religious sanctity, claiming that RSS infiltration in Assam is fueling communal divisions.
“This entire episode shows the failure of the home department. Why was there no intelligence input? The government has failed to protect the sanctity of our religious places,” Gogoi stated.
Meanwhile, AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam has condemned the shoot-on-sight orders issued by Sarma, alleging that the directive selectively targets one particular community.
Despite the criticism, Sarma remains firm on his stance, asserting that his government will not tolerate any attempts to destabilize Assam.
“The law-and-order situation was a little challenging here for the last one week. After Eid-ul-Zuha, somebody kept a severed head of a cow in a Hanuman temple. Peace committees are formed involving Hindus and Muslims. However, it was repeated the next day again,” Sarma explained.
The Assam CM has vowed to eliminate communal forces and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
Conclusion: A Deepening Divide
The Dhubri beef case has exposed deep political and communal fault lines in Assam. While Sarma has dismissed allegations against Hindus and demanded proof from Gogoi, the Congress continues to question the BJP’s governance. With tensions running high, the situation in Dhubri remains volatile, and the political discourse surrounding it is unlikely to settle anytime soon. As Assam braces for the 2026 elections, the battle over communal narratives will likely play a crucial role in shaping the state’s political landscape.
