On the evening of June 25, a 24-year-old first-year student of South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gang-raped inside the institution by an alumnus and two senior students. According to her complaint, she had visited the college to submit a form when she was coerced into staying back in the union room. What followed was a horrifying ordeal that lasted over three hours.

The survivor stated that one of the accused, a former student and practicing criminal lawyer, proposed marriage. Upon her refusal, citing an existing relationship he allegedly assaulted her while the other two stood guard. The victim’s account details how she was physically overpowered, denied medical help despite breathing difficulties, and later threatened with the release of a video recording of the assault.
This incident has not only shattered the sense of safety within the academic institution but also revived painful memories of past campus crimes in Kolkata. The college, once a symbol of legal education, now finds itself at the center of a criminal investigation and public outrage.
Medical Evidence Validates Survivor’s Testimony
The survivor underwent a medical examination on the same day she filed her complaint at the Kasba Police Station. The results were damning: evidence of forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches were found on her body, including around her neck. These findings have corroborated her allegations and strengthened the legal case against the accused.
All three suspects were arrested within 12 hours of the complaint being lodged. The police have sealed the crime scene and seized the mobile phones of the accused, which allegedly contain video footage of the assault. According to Chief Police Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal, under Supreme Court guidelines, all individuals involved in a gang rape whether or not they physically committed the act are equally culpable.
The swift medical confirmation has lent credibility to the survivor’s voice and catalyzed a broader conversation about the systemic failures that allow such crimes to occur within educational institutions.

The incident has triggered widespread condemnation across West Bengal. Political parties have clashed over the issue, with the ruling Trinamool Congress promising swift justice while facing criticism from opposition leaders for alleged lapses in campus security.
State Minister Shashi Panja addressed the media, assuring that the government stands with the survivor and that the police acted promptly. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of the case and demanded a detailed report from Kolkata Police within three days.
Protests have erupted outside the college and police station, with students, activists, and citizens demanding institutional reforms, better campus surveillance, and psychological support for survivors. The case has also reignited calls for stricter enforcement of laws against sexual violence and more robust mechanisms for redressal within educational spaces.
