Veteran actor Nagarjuna opens up about his powerful role in Sekhar Kammula’s socio-political thriller Kuberaa
“I Just Said Yes”: Nagarjuna’s Leap of Faith in Sekhar Kammula
For an actor with a legacy as rich as Nagarjuna’s, choosing the right script is more than a career move, it’s a matter of instinct. And when Kuberaa came calling, instinct took over. “Sekhar Kammula came to me and said, ‘Would you like to do this role?’ I didn’t even ask what it was. I just said yes,” Nagarjuna revealed at a recent press event.

This wasn’t just another multi-starrer for the veteran actor. It was a long-awaited collaboration with a filmmaker he deeply admired. “I’ve wanted to work with Sekhar for over 15 years. His stories are rooted in reality, socially relevant, and emotionally honest,” he said. That admiration translated into complete trust, so much so that Nagarjuna didn’t even want to see the monitor during filming. “I told him, ‘Do what you want with me. I’ve surrendered,’” he added with a smile.
A Role with Shades: The CBI Officer Torn Between Right and Wrong
In Kuberaa, Nagarjuna plays a middle-class man who also happens to be a CBI officer, a character caught in a moral tug-of-war. “He’s someone who constantly questions whether to do good or bad. There are many shades to him,” Nagarjuna explained. The role is unlike anything he’s done before, demanding a nuanced performance that balances duty, emotion, and internal conflict.
Shot across real locations like Tirupati, Mumbai, Goa, and Bangkok, the film’s authenticity mirrors the complexity of its characters. “My body language, speech, and reactions are all different in this film. It’s Sekhar’s style, raw, real, and deeply human,” Nagarjuna noted.
The actor also praised his co-stars, especially Dhanush, calling their collaboration “magical.” Rashmika Mandanna, too, earned his admiration for her “repressed yet powerful” role. “After watching the film, I told her, ‘You’re the star,’” he said warmly.
More Than a Movie: A Story That Mirrors Society
What drew Nagarjuna most to Kuberaa wasn’t just the character, it was the story. “There’s a clash between three layers of society, the ultra-rich, the middle class, and those below the poverty line. It’s a bold, socially relevant narrative,” he emphasized. The film doesn’t follow a traditional hero-villain arc. Instead, every character is equally important, equally flawed, and equally human.
Sekhar Kammula’s screenplay avoids clichés, opting instead for a layered, non-linear structure. “This isn’t a regular film. It’s not routine. It takes guts to make something like this,” Nagarjuna said. He also credited the producers, Suniel Narang and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao, for backing such a daring project on a pan-India scale.
With music by Devi Sri Prasad and cinematography by Niketh Bommi, Kuberaa is set to release in five languages-Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam, on June 20, 2025. The film has already generated massive buzz, not just for its star-studded cast but for its promise of substance over spectacle.
Conclusion:
For Nagarjuna, Kuberaa isn’t just another film, it’s a statement. A statement of trust, of artistic surrender, and of choosing stories that matter. As he steps into the morally grey shoes of a conflicted CBI officer, audiences can expect a performance that’s as layered as the man himself. And in a cinematic landscape often driven by formula, Kuberaa stands out as a bold, heartfelt exception.
