A Historic Visit: Bhutan PM Pays Tribute at Ram Mandir
Bhutan PM’s Spiritual Journey to Ayodhya – In a moment that blended diplomacy with deep spirituality, Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and his wife Aum Tashi Doma visited the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya on September 5, 2025. Their visit marked a historic first, Tobgay became the first foreign head of government to offer prayers at the newly built temple dedicated to Lord Ram.
The couple spent over an hour and a half at the temple complex, participating in rituals and admiring the architecture. They bowed before Ram Lalla three times, took prasad after the aarti, and visited nearby shrines like Hanumangarhi, Kuber Teela, and Jatayu Mandap. Their reverence was evident, and their presence was warmly welcomed by local officials and temple authorities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the visit, stating that “the ideals of Prabhu Shri Ram give strength and inspiration to millions across the globe”. The gesture not only highlighted Bhutan’s cultural ties with India but also underscored the spiritual significance of Ayodhya on the global stage.
Silence from Home: Where Are India’s Key Opposition Leaders?
While the Bhutanese dignitaries embraced the spiritual essence of Ayodhya, notable Indian political figures Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi have yet to make their way to the Ram Mandir. Their absence has not gone unnoticed, especially among those who view the temple as a symbol of Hindu faith and national pride.
Rahul Gandhi recently visited the Janaki Mandir in Sitamarhi, Bihar, alongside Tejashwi Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav, as part of the “Voter Adhikar Yatra”. However, critics argue that visiting Sita’s birthplace while avoiding Ram’s temple sends mixed signals. Acharya Pramod Krishnam even called Gandhi’s visit to Janaki Mandir “hypocrisy,” questioning why he declined the Ram Mandir invitation.
Akhilesh Yadav, on the other hand, has stated that he will visit the Ram Mandir with his family but only after the construction is fully complete. He also expressed dissatisfaction over how invitations were distributed, suggesting that political bias may have influenced the guest list.
Faith or Politics: What Does This Say About Hindu Sentiment?
The contrasting actions of foreign and domestic leaders have sparked a broader conversation: does Hindu faith matter equally to all political parties?
For many Hindus, the Ram Mandir is not just a temple, it’s a culmination of decades of struggle, belief, and cultural identity. The absence of prominent opposition leaders at such a landmark site has led some to question whether their political strategies are out of touch with the sentiments of millions of devotees.
While leaders like Akhilesh and Rahul may argue that their priorities lie in governance and social justice, critics believe that acknowledging Hindu faith publicly is not just symbolic, it’s respectful. The optics of a foreign leader honouring Ram Lalla while Indian leaders remain distant has stirred emotions and debates across social media and news platforms.
A Lesson in Unity: Faith Can Transcend Borders
Bhutan PM Tobgay’s visit serves as a reminder that spiritual values can transcend national boundaries. His respectful engagement with Indian traditions, from Ayodhya to Nalanda, reflects a deep appreciation for shared heritage.
In contrast, the hesitation or delay from Indian opposition leaders raises questions about political messaging and cultural sensitivity. Whether intentional or circumstantial, their absence from Ayodhya has become a talking point, one that may influence public perception ahead of future elections.
Ultimately, faith is personal, but public figures carry the added responsibility of representing collective emotions. As the Ram Mandir continues to attract pilgrims and dignitaries from around the world, it remains to be seen when and how India’s own leaders will respond to this spiritual call.
