The Moment Captured: CCTV Footage Tells the Story

According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred around 3 a.m. in Guwahati’s Udalbakra area. Samiul, a student at Nalbari Polytechnic, was returning home after working a night shift with the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), helping repair streetlights.

CCTV footage shows a speeding Bolero SUV plowing into Samiul, who was walking along the roadside. The vehicle did not stop. Eyewitnesses claim the driver later identified as Kashyap, fled the scene, leaving the young man critically injured.

Who Was Samiul Haque? The Chase and Arrest

Samiul wasn’t just another student. He was the sole breadwinner of his family, working part-time to support his education and household after the death of his father. Described by friends as hardworking and humble, Samiul’s life was a testament to perseverance.

After the accident, fellow GMC workers rushed him to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). As his condition worsened, he was shifted to Apollo Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on July 29.

Following the incident, GMC workers chased the SUV and tracked it to an apartment complex in Kahilipara, where Kashyap allegedly tried to conceal the vehicle. Tensions escalated when she reportedly assaulted a bystander who was recording the confrontation on his phone.

Initially, police questioned Kashyap and seized her vehicle, but no arrest was made due to the case being registered under bailable sections. However, after Samiul’s death, the charges were upgraded to include culpable homicide not amounting to murder and hit-and-run causing death, both non-bailable offenses under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

She was arrested around 1:30 a.m. on July 30 from the rehearsal premises of Rajdhani Theatre in North Guwahati and taken to Dispur Police Station for formal procedures.

Assam Hit and Run Horror – The Fall of a Rising Star

Nandini Kashyap, known for her lead role in the Assamese film Rudra, had recently risen to regional stardom. Her arrest has not only shaken the entertainment industry but also led to swift professional consequences.

Rajdhani Theatre, where she held a two-year acting contract, terminated the agreement immediately, issuing a statement condemning the incident and expressing solidarity with Samiul’s family.

Public Outcry and Social Media Storm

The incident has triggered widespread outrage across Assam and beyond. Social media platforms have been flooded with demands for justice, with hashtags like #JusticeForSamiul trending.

The All Assam Polytechnic Students’ Union (AAPSU) filed an FIR and organized protests, demanding a speedy trial and strict punishment for Kashyap. Samiul’s mother, in a tearful statement, said:

“We want justice for our son. She didn’t even come to see him once. She had promised to take care of his treatment but abandoned us when we needed help the most.”

Forensic Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Police have seized two vehicles belonging to Kashyap and sent them to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination. Investigators are analyzing CCTV footage and eyewitness testimonies to build a strong case.

While there were allegations that Kashyap was under the influence of alcohol, police stated that it was not possible to confirm, as they were informed about the incident only the next day.

A Pattern of Recklessness? Celebrity Privilege and Road Safety

Reports have surfaced suggesting that Kashyap’s vehicle had a history of traffic violations, including multiple speeding challans issued across different districts. This has raised questions about whether her driving behavior had been overlooked due to her celebrity status.

This case has reignited debates around celebrity privilege, road safety, and delayed justice. Many are questioning whether the initial delay in arresting Kashyap was influenced by her public profile.

Legal experts argue that the case could set a precedent for how non-bailable offenses involving public figures are handled in India. The application of BNS 105 and BNSS 125B marks a shift toward stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
