India elects its next Vice President today as Radhakrishnan and Reddy face off in a crucial vote that could reshape Parliament’s leadership and alliances
A Big Day in Indian Politics: Choosing the Next Vice President
Radhakrishnan vs Reddy in India’s Vice President Race: Battle for the Rajya Sabha Chair – Today, India is witnessing a major political event, the election of the country’s next Vice President. This position is not just ceremonial; the Vice President is also the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. The two main candidates in this race are CP Radhakrishnan, backed by the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and B Sudershan Reddy, supported by the opposition INDIA bloc.
The election was triggered by the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, citing health reasons. Now, Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will vote in a secret ballot between 10 AM and 5 PM at the new Parliament building. The counting will begin at 6 PM, and results are expected later this evening.
This contest is more than just numbers, it’s a test of unity, strategy, and political messaging. While the NDA has a clear numerical edge, the opposition is hoping to make a strong symbolic impact.
Meet the Candidates: Experience vs Integrity
CP Radhakrishnan, 67, is a seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu. He served two terms in the Lok Sabha and was the Governor of Maharashtra. Known for his administrative skills and clean record, Radhakrishnan is seen as a stable choice for the Vice President’s role. He has received support from NDA allies and even some unaligned MPs like those from the YSR Congress.
B Sudershan Reddy, 79, is a retired Supreme Court judge. He is respected for his landmark rulings, including those on black money and tribal rights. The opposition INDIA bloc chose him to represent legal integrity and social justice. His candidacy is being pitched as a moral and ideological stand against the ruling alliance.
While Radhakrishnan brings political experience, Reddy offers judicial wisdom. The choice between them reflects two different visions for the role of Vice President.
The Numbers Game: Who Has the Edge?
The total strength of the electoral college is 781 MPs. However, with 11 members from BJD and BRS abstaining, the effective voting strength drops to 770. To win, a candidate needs at least 386 votes.
The NDA claims support from 429 MPs, which gives Radhakrishnan a clear advantage. On the other hand, the opposition bloc has around 324 MPs. They are urging their members to vote with their conscience, calling this election an “ideological battle”.
Interestingly, MPs are not bound by party whips in this election. That means they can vote freely, which opens the door for surprises. Mock polls were conducted by both sides to ensure MPs understand the voting process and avoid invalid ballots.
Unaligned MPs could play a key role. AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi has pledged support for Reddy, while others remain undecided. The final result will not only decide the Vice President but also reflect the strength and unity of political alliances.
What’s at Stake: More Than Just a Title
The Vice President of India holds the second-highest constitutional office in the country. As Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, the Vice President plays a crucial role in maintaining order, guiding debates, and ensuring smooth functioning of the house.
This election is also a signal of political momentum. If the opposition manages to close the gap or win unexpected support, it could boost their morale ahead of future elections. For the NDA, a strong win would reinforce their dominance in Parliament and show unity among their ranks.
Beyond politics, this contest is a reflection of India’s democratic spirit. Two very different candidates, one from the world of politics, the other from the judiciary, are being considered for a role that demands wisdom, fairness, and leadership.
As the nation waits for the results, one thing is clear: today’s vote is not just about who sits in the Vice President’s chair, it’s about the kind of leadership India wants in its Parliament.
