The End of an Era: Shibu Soren Final Journey – On the morning of August 4, 2025, India bid farewell to one of its most enduring political figures, Shibu Soren, the three-time Chief Minister of Jharkhand and founding patriarch of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Known affectionately as “Dishom Guru” or “Guruji,” Soren’s death marks the end of a chapter in Indian politics defined by grassroots activism, tribal empowerment, and relentless pursuit of social justice. His passing was met with an outpouring of grief across the political spectrum. The Jharkhand Assembly adjourned sine die, and the state government declared a three-day mourning period.

Born in Nemra village in 1944, Soren’s political journey began in the forests and coalfields of Jharkhand, where he led movements against land encroachment and exploitation of tribal communities. His activism laid the foundation for the creation of Jharkhand as a separate state in 2000, a milestone that cemented his legacy as a champion of tribal rights.

Despite his humble beginnings, Soren rose to national prominence, serving as a Union Minister, Member of Parliament, and Chief Minister in three separate terms. His leadership was often turbulent, marked by political instability and legal controversies, but his commitment to the tribal cause remained unwavering.

His final days were spent in quiet struggle. Admitted to the hospital on June 19, Soren had been on life support for nearly a month before being declared dead at 8:56 a.m. on August 4. The hospital confirmed that he passed away peacefully, despite the best efforts of their medical team.

A Nation Pays Tribute: Modi Consoles Hemant, Leaders Mourn Loss

As news of Soren’s death spread, tributes poured in from across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay his respects in person, meeting with Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Shibu’s son, and other family members. In a heartfelt post, Modi described Soren as a “grassroots leader” who dedicated his life to empowering tribal communities and the underprivileged.

“Went to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay homage to Shri Shibu Soren Ji. Also met his family. My thoughts are with Hemant Ji, Kalpana Ji and the admirers of Shri Shibu Soren Ji,” Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute, calling Soren’s death a “big loss in the space of social justice”, and visited the hospital to offer her condolences. Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar echoed the sentiment, describing Soren as a “strong voice of tribal identity and rights”.

Political leaders from across party lines expressed sorrow. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar called Soren’s passing an “irreparable loss”, while RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav remembered him as a fellow struggler for social justice. Tejashwi Yadav referred to him as a “guardian”, whose contributions to tribal welfare would never be forgotten.

Hemant Soren, visibly shaken, posted a deeply emotional message:

“Respected Dishom Guruji has left us all… I have become ‘shunya’ (zero) today”.

The grief was not just political, it was personal. For Hemant, the loss of his father was also the loss of a mentor, a guide, and a symbol of resilience. The body of Shibu Soren will be brought to Ranchi, taken to the Jharkhand Assembly, and later to his native village Nemra for final rites.

Legacy of a Tribal Icon: Lessons from Shibu Soren’s Life

Shibu Soren’s legacy is layered and profound. He was not just a politician—he was a movement, a symbol, and a voice for millions of tribal citizens who had long been marginalized in India’s socio-political landscape.

His early activism in the 1970s, which included organizing protests against illegal land grabs and exploitation of tribal laborers, earned him both admiration and notoriety. He was arrested multiple times, but his resolve only strengthened. In 1972, he founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, a party that would become the cornerstone of tribal politics in the region.

Soren’s political career was marked by both triumph and turbulence. He served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand in 2005, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010, though his tenures were often short-lived due to coalition challenges and legal entanglements. He was also elected to the Lok Sabha eight times and served two terms in the Rajya Sabha, showcasing his enduring popularity among the people.

Despite controversies including a conviction in a 1994 murder case from which he was later acquitted—Soren remained a towering figure in Jharkhand’s political landscape. His ability to connect with the grassroots, especially tribal communities, was unmatched.

Shibu Soren Final Journey

His death comes at a time when India is grappling with questions of identity, inclusion, and representation. Soren’s life offers lessons in resilience, grassroots mobilization, and the importance of staying rooted in one’s community. He was a reminder that leadership is not just about power, it’s about purpose.

As Jharkhand mourns its Dishom Guru, the nation must reflect on the values he stood for: justice, dignity, and empowerment. His passing may mark the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of leaders who seek to serve not from above, but from within.
